Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy finds George Smiley (Gary Oldman), a recently retired MI6 agent, doing his best to adjust to a life outside the secret service. However, when a disgraced agent reappears with information concerning a mole at the heart of the service, Smiley is drawn back into the murky field of espionage. Tasked with investigating which of his trusted former colleagues has chosen to betray him and their country, Smiley narrows his search to four suspects - all experienced, skilled and successful agents - but past histories, rivalries and friendships make it far from easy to pinpoint the man who is eating away at the heart of the British establishment. (127mins)

To mark the Queens Diamond Jubilee we are screening a British comedy classic, The Lavender Hill Mob from the 1950s. Come along and enjoy this digitally restored classic on the big screen. Holland (Alec Guinness), is a shy retiring man who works as a bank transfer agent for the delivery of gold bullion. One day he befriends Pendlebury (Stanley Holloway), a maker of souvenirs. Holland remarks that, with Pendlebury's smelting equipment, one could forge the gold into harmless-looking toy Eiffel Towers and smuggle the gold into France. Soon after, they gain the services of professional criminals Lackery (Sid James) and Shorty (Alfie Bass) and the four plot their crime, unaware of the pitfalls which lie ahead. (81 mins)

A group of British retirees decide to "outsource" their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self. Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past. (124 mins)

From director Steven Spielberg comes War Horse, an epic adventure for audiences of all ages. Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, War Horse begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows Joey’s the extraordinary journey as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets – British cavalry, German soldiers and a French farmer and his granddaughter – before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land. Parish News

abcDo you have children or grandchildren?
Would you like to see a children’s play area in the village of Balscote?
Somewhere safe where the children can enjoy themselves and have fun with friends?

If you’ve answered YES to any of these questions, we’d like YOUR support to turn this idea into a reality !

There are a growing number of children in the village and many residents also have grandchildren. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a safe play area where they could meet, play and have fun together? The idea at this stage is to install a small range of timber style play equipment suitable for all ages around the edge of the village hall site. We have support from the village hall team and parish council to kick-off a project to make this happen. As a first step in the project we’d like to gather opinion from the whole Balscote community and are planning to hold an open meeting to discuss the idea and gather your thoughts on how we can make it a success.

Please join us for an initial meeting at Balscote Village Hall on <date and time to be confirmed>
and bring the children too… this play area is for them so we’d like their ideas as well !

We will have a separate children’s ideas session supervised by some of the older children in the village, where everyone can get involved and share their ideas. Soft drinks and biscuits will be included!

What we hope to get from this first meeting…

  • Your support and ideas, and any concerns you may have.
  • A committed project team who will take on the challenge of making it happen.

What you can do before attending the meeting…

  • Ask the children to think about the play areas that they have enjoyed and what they would like to see.

It won’t happen without you… please get involved to deliver it for the children in Balscote
